Abstract

Rift Valley fever is an epizootic acute febrile illness primarily affecting domesticated sheep and cattle, with the capacity to infect humans, caused by Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus, an arthropod-borne phlebovirus in the Bunyaviridae family. It is transmitted via contact with body fluids of infected livestock or, less commonly, bites by infected mosquitoes. Human-to-human transmission has not been reported. Its presentation ranges from mild to lethal; the most feared complications are hemorrhagic fever and encephalitis. Ocular manifestations are common (1–10%).
