Abstract

Stereotactic radiosurgery represents an attractive alternative option to resective surgery to treat medically refractory epilepsy. The ablation of an epileptic focus, especially when performed through frameless image-guided radiosurgery, is a minimally invasive treatment devoid of the risks of open surgical procedures. Radiosurgery has been attempted to treat patients with neocortical, hippocampal, or diencephalic seizure foci for whom invasive mapping is not necessary. Disconnective procedures such as radiosurgical callosotomy can be performed as well. In this article, we review the state-of-the- art of radiosurgical treatment of epilepsy, with specific focus on robotic image-guided radiosurgery.
