Abstract

Although medicine expenditures represent one of the main budgetary elements for health care systems worldwide, it does not ensure their correct use by patients. Incorrect use of medicines seriously compromises their effectiveness. In fact, it is estimated that approximately half of patients with chronic conditions in developed countries are not adherent to their treatment, representing a major health problem. It has been acknowledged that the design and implementation of individualized strategies tailored at specific determinants of nonadherence is crucial in the management of medication adherence. Therefore, a deep understanding of patient medication-taking behavior and its determinants is essential. This chapter provides an overview of the concept of medication adherence and its components. A summary of different medication adherence determinants reported in the literature is provided. An overview of different medication adherence management interventions reported in the literature is provided and discussed.
