Abstract

The effectiveness of pharmacist interventions is supported by high-level evidence from around the world. Such effectiveness combined with high levels of patient satisfaction and support renders pharmacy interventions as a great option to reduce the strain on the overstretched healthcare systems. But before deciding to go down that path, we need to confirm that it is a cost-effective option.

This entry discusses the evidence of the economic evaluation of pharmacist prescribing in community pharmacy. The reviewed research clearly indicates that pharmacist prescribing in a community pharmacy setting was associated with cost savings when compared to interventions by other healthcare providers or usual care. Yet, despite this positive evidence, more primary literature is still needed to fill this knowledge gap, provide further evidence to support full scope of practice for community pharmacists, and present policy makers around the world with an innovative and cost-effective option to reduce the burden on the already overstrained healthcare system.
