Abstract

Medicines are an important component of health systems but are often not used rationally. Irrational use can have serious consequences, namely increasing the cost of treatment, adverse drug reactions, interactions, and antimicrobial resistance, among others. Educating healthcare providers about medicines is an important intervention to promote their rational use. There is an information explosion regarding new medicines and continuing education can help providers stay up to date with latest developments.

Different personnel including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, paramedical personnel, traditional and complementary medicine practitioners, licensed drug sellers, and others are involved in the use of medicines. Interprofessional collaboration is also important. In this chapter an overview of education provided to practicing doctors, pharmacists, licensed drug sellers, and educators in interprofessional teams is provided. Education about pharmacovigilance is also discussed. The focus is on low- and middle-income countries. Challenges in this area are also examined. The lessons learned are highlighted.

Many of these have been initiatives limited to a period of time carried out by individuals and organizations. These need to be sustained and continued and incorporated into the framework of regulatory systems. The mismatch between the vast amounts spent by the pharmaceutical industry on commercial use of medicines and the much smaller amounts earmarked for their rational use is also discussed.
