Abstract

The first description of arterial fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD, initially called fibromuscular hyperplasia) is attributed to Leadbetter and Burkland [1] in 1938. Twenty years later, McCormack et al. [2], reporting at the 55th annual meeting of the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists, described FMD in four renal arteries of three hypertensive patients. FMD is currently defined [3] as a non-inflammatory, non-atherosclerotic arterial disease affecting most commonly the renal and cervico-cephalic arteries [4], which may be responsible of stenoses, occlusions, dissections, and aneurysms [5]. It consists on an idiopathic and segmental alteration of the musculature of the arterial wall, leading initially to stenosis of small- and medium-sized arteries [6]. As a matter of fact, FMD has been observed in almost every artery [7]; it may be asymptomatic [5] and therefore its prevalence in the general population is not known.
