Abstract
This chapter reviews the evidence-based benefits of a comprehensive plant-based diet that can be a treatment strategy for laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Guidelines give a “how to” transition from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to a plant-based diet, 90–95% whole food, Mediterranean style of eating. Included are explanations of sufficient protein in plant-based foods, daily recommendations, a grocery guide for home cooking, and strategies to follow when dining out in restaurants, as well as when traveling and socializing. Diet alone can be the solution in eliminating GERD and LPR. Obesity is linked to increased symptoms of GERD/LPR and addressing weight management along with diet and nutrition are key. This guide can help physicians, health care providers, and medical students learn how to transition to a plant-based diet themselves to better encourage diet change in their patients. This chapter is meant to serve as a reference to help with a plant-based, Mediterranean-style transition.
