Abstract

Upper endoscopy (EGD) allows for direct visualization of the oropharynx, esophagus, stomach, and proximal duodenum. EGD is often the first test performed in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Endoscopic treatments can be administered through upper endoscopy for the treatment of GERD. Ultrasound, although classically not used to diagnose GERD, can be used to rule out alternate upper gastrointestinal (GI) diagnoses.
