Abstract
Lung metastases are identified in 30–55% of all cancer patients and are the second most frequent site of metastatic spread for colorectal and breast cancer. Thermal ablation such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), microwave ablation (MWA), and cryoablation of lung oligometastasis is a viable substitute for radiation therapy and surgical resection in appropriately selected patients. In this chapter, we discuss the current evidence supporting the use of thermal ablation in patients with pulmonary oligometastasis, technical considerations of the procedure, patient selection, potential complications, and reported outcomes. Additionally, we will discuss the data for surgery and radiation therapy on the oligometastatic patient and how ablation can fit into the paradigm.
