Abstract
Cardiothoracic conditions and injuries may occur in civilian or military settings, as a result of peacetime activities, disasters, or conflict-related injuries. These conditions and injuries are frequently of high severity, complexity, and lethality. Resources to definitively manage these patients are typically restricted to a few major medical centers in large cities. This frequently requires transport of very complex patients, either immediately after injury to reach the hospital rapidly and hopefully alive or as an interfacility transfer, often on significant organ support using specialized critical care equipment such as ventilators and monitors aboard ground or air vehicles.
