Abstract
Throughout history, scholars and artists have traveled the world to draw and learn about architecture. One of the most travelled destinations is Italy, a visit that became popular from the 17th century onwards. This trip known as Grand Tour, has also been made by great architects of the twentieth century: Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen and Louis Kahn among others.
The aim of this article is to continue the research we have been carrying out in recent years on the non-projectural pictorial work of Louis Isadore Kahn.
The architect’s first two trips to Italy were a fundamental source of inspiration for his future projects.
Based on the work published by J. Hochstim in 1991: The paintings and sketches of Louis I. Kahn, we have tried to identify and characterize each drawing made by the American architect, through the elaboration of unpublished plans and worksheets. In addition to getting to know the spaces crossed by the great architect and establishing an eventual relationship with his work, we have also made our own drawings in the same spaces where Kahn drew.
In this article, we will focus on drawings, plans and worksheets related to the city that Kahn represented the most: Venice.
