Abstract

An emerging technology called wireless mesh networks (WMN) may get the vision of a seamlessly connected world into actuality. WMN can simply, excellently, and wirelessly connect entire cities using inexpensive, existing technology. The placement of mesh routers and gateways is the initial step to ensure the desired network performance such as throughput, connectivity, and coverage of a network. The primary objective in designing a WMN is placing the minimum number of routers and gateways such that quality of service (QoS) demands are guaranteed. In this article, a comprehensive study on existing approaches in mesh router node placement problem in WMN has been done, and the factors that influence the placement of mesh router nodes along with its design metrics are discussed. We also discuss how such existing approaches could allow more effective mesh node placement, thereby enabling a greater number of consumers to obtain Internet services.
