Abstract

This chapter identifies the different types of standards bodies that are relevant to the IoT at all levels. These include bodies developing formal standards at European level, such as CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI, and at International level such as ISO, IEC, and ITU. However, equally important to the IoT are fora and consortia with worldwide membership, such as OIC and W3C, and also fora such as the Open Connectivity Foundation and industry associations such as the European Committee of Domestic Equipment Manufacturers (CECED). The chapter also identifies the most important work in progress on IoT standards and how these are being developed. A major focus is on the standardization of ontologies that are being defined in bodies such as oneM2M, ETSI SmartM2M, and W3C. Specific requirements of IoT applications will be met in bodies such as the Continua Health Alliance and ISO/IEC JTC1.
