Abstract
In this chapter, the development of percutaneous dilatational tracheotomy techniques used worldwide today is presented in pictures and text on the basis of their historical origins. The basic principle of today’s PDT has not changed since Ciaglia described it in 1985, regardless of the technical variants used today. The reader is familiarized with the procedural flow, advantages, typical difficulties and complications of the individual procedures, which facilitates decision-making in selecting the method. Questions and decision-making support in the differential indication of dilatational methods in contrast to surgical procedures are discussed in detail.
