Abstract

WLANs have become increasingly popular and widespread. The MAC protocol is an important item of WLANs, and directly affects the transmission efficiency. In this paper, we focus on MAC protocol and propose a new protocol that network nodes dynamically optimize backoff processing to achieve high throughput in multi-hop wireless networks. The distributed MAC protocol has the advantage that no infrastructure such as an access point is required. On the other hand, if the traffic load is high, due to the hidden terminal problem, the total throughput will drop significantly, so it needs to be improved. Through theoretical analysis, the average idle slot interval can be used as an index related to the current network traffic load. With average idle slot interval together with the number of neighbor nodes optimal CW (Contention Window) which can be set for a high throughput. Comparing the conventional method with the simulation results, we show that our method greatly increases the throughput when it is saturated.
