Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms (e.g., dyspnea, cough) and airflow limitation usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles (most commonly: smoking). Beyond these respiratory limitations, COPD is regarded as a systemic disease with patients suffering from skeletal muscle wasting mostly related to physical inactivity. Therefore, exercise training is a very effective modality to increase exercise performance, reduce dyspnea, and improve quality of life in patients with COPD. Within the recent years, also whole-body vibration (WBV) training has been investigated and applied in COPD patients. Currently, there is an increasing body of evidence showing that WBV training can be an effective therapeutic option to improve exercise performance. It seems that WBV training is especially beneficial in COPD patients with advanced disease and impaired physical conditions. The rationale, evidence, and practical implementation for WBV training in COPD patients will be discussed in this chapter.
