Nursing Management of Pediatric Disaster

Abstract

Rapid changes in climate around the world have significantly increased concern that weather-related disasters will increase in frequency and magnitude in the near future. Likewise, there is growing worry that man-made disasters are increasing in frequency as well as destructive capacity. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to disruptions in everyday life when disasters strike. Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) also have risks to health and well-being during disasters because of mobility challenges, language impairment, and/or difficulties with intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. Despite the many needs of this at-risk population of children, their unique requirements in disasters remain largely unaddressed. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the requirements of children with special health care needs during disasters.
