Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders are a significant cause of illness and missed work and affect morbidity, quality of life, and mortality. Chronic musculoskeletal pain (greater than 3 months) is a major health and socioeconomic burden. Approximately 25% of the world’s population live with significant, chronic pain negatively impacting psychological health, quality of life, physical function, and work ability. Musculoskeletal diseases make up the fourth leading contributor to disease burden in older adults. Between 1990 and 2010, this burden increased by 46%, resulting in significant challenges to maintaining physical activity.
