The Trope of the Wanderer in “Post” Era German (Migration?) Literature

Abstract

Migration literature is described in terms of concepts such as transculture, identity, foreignness and alienation, heterogeneity and hybrid. Critics place it in the current of postmodern literature, taking into account the historical context and the legacy of colonial politics of the nineteenth century and the division of Europe in the twentieth century. Modern research unambiguously confirms the presence of writers with a migration past in the cultural life of Germany. This, combined with the invariably rapid progress of globalization, makes it necessary to ask whether it is justified and reasonable to place migration literature outside national literature (if there is such a thing) (e.g., Palej, 2015; Stolarczyk-Gembiak, 2015; Warakomska/Ötztürk, 2016). In a brief contribution to an extensive discussion, the theme of wanderer or nomad, appears as the leitmotif in contemporary postmodern (migration) literature.
