Corporate Human Rights Responsibility in Times of Increasing Socio-cultural and Political Isolationism

Abstract

Socio-cultural isolationist policies (e.g., anti-immigration, anti-Muslim, and anti-refugee policies) may contribute to foster a culture of disrespect toward vulnerable groups in everyday life and, in particular, the workplace. This chapter refreshes and reaffirms that multinationals have not only social responsibilities but also human rights responsibilities toward their employees, stakeholders, and host nations. In the absence of national regulations that ensure human rights compliance of non-discrimination; civil, political, and cultural rights; and the right to a safe environment, multinationals become vital safe-keepers of multiculturalism in the workplace. Multinationals can secure employees and stakeholders with a safe environment that respects diversity and preserves dignity. By drawing on western and non-western theoretical perspectives of human relations, this chapter puts forward a set of strategies that companies can use to neutralize and overcome some of the devastating effects of socio-cultural and political isolationism and flourish multiculturalism, diversity, and inclusion in the workspace.
