Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals

Abstract

Diet has an important impact on human health. Healthy diets, therefore, promote good health. The most recent scientific literature broadly supports the importance of diet-related habits during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in the same manner, lifestyle also affect the health of mothers and their offspring. Consumption from the preconceptional era of a diverse and balanced diet is essential for wellbeing as well as for the outcomes of pregnancy. However, micronutrient deficiencies due to inadequate intake and other forms, even in the most industrialized countries, during pregnancy and lactation may be due to inadequate intakes of specific micronutrients during pregnancy and lactation. This chapter presents the role of nutraceuticals in maternal nutrition.
