Abstract

Atrial tachycardias (ATs) are common arrhythmias and may lead to palpitations, dyspnea, reduced exercise capacity, and the development of heart failure. ATs are found in a broad spectrum of patients and can occur in young and aged patients. Underlying mechanisms are macro- and microreentry and focal activities. Recently, arrhythmias, which develop after previous catheter or surgical ablation, have become common. The initial diagnosis is made by electrocardiographic analysis, and algorithms have been evaluated which allow for precise arrhythmia classification. Further evaluation is possible by invasive electrophysiological studies. Technical developments such as three-dimensional electroanatomic mapping systems and high-resolution mapping tools have significantly improved the understanding of ATs and facilitated the possibilities to treat these arrhythmias. Catheter ablation has evolved to be the most effective therapy of AT. Success rates depend on the underlying arrhythmia mechanism and underlying heart disease.
