Abstract
When a patient is expected to require long - term mechanical ventilation, a tracheostomy has been shown to improve outcomes. A tracheostomy can be performed in the OR as an open procedure, or at the bedside of the intensive care unit using a percutaneous technique under direct visualization with the aid of a bronchoscope. The present chapter describes the steps for a percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy.
