Abstract
Suicide prevention is complex and involves many approaches that have been empirically validated. Psychodynamic (or psychoanalytic) psychotherapy is practiced throughout the world and used effectively to prevent suicide in a wide range of suicidal situations. Successful psychodynamic approaches have been energized by innovative developments, which have evolved to supplement more traditional open-ended psychotherapies with emerging evidence for their effectiveness. This chapter is an appraisal of these promising new developments to provide global applications of psychodynamic psychotherapy as an important evolving method for reducing suicidal behavior. Three key areas of innovation are highlighted in this chapter: different formats for delivery of psychodynamic psychotherapies, evidence base for the effectiveness of psychodynamic psychotherapy in the treatment of suicidal people, and clinical contributions of psychodynamic psychotherapy to the treatment of suicidal patients.
