Perspectives in Performing Arts Medicine Practice

Abstract

Preventive education presents a viable strategy to decrease the high incidence of performance-related musculoskeletal problems (PRMDs) in musicians. Following a literature review on PRMDs and preventive education, selected exercises designed to promote physical sensitization and bodily stabilization during musical performance are discussed. Pictures of musicians performing (a pianist, a trombonist, and a violist) before and after learning sessions of the exercises allow for visual observation of immediate changes in postural behavior. Participants’ change of attitude after the workshops supports an argument for the effectiveness of a preventive strategy and suggests a symbiotic connection between postural alignment and performance optimization.
