Abstract

Cross-country skiing is a low-impact, highly aerobic sport with relatively few injuries. Most injuries are of the overuse variety. Due to the variety of cross-training that most skiers employed due to limited availability of snow, some injuries are more related to the cross-training activities, though some injuries are quite specific for cross-country skiers. Low back pain occurs more frequently in cross-country skiers than the general population. Fractures, while infrequent, can occur, usually as a result of falls. Collisions between skiers can also cause injuries. Environmental factors, usually due to cold temperatures coinciding with snowy climates, and hydration and nutrition issues related to longer duration events should also be considered in preparing for participation and medical coverage of this sport.
