Abstract
The chapter describes and explains a basic concepts and terms of indicators to monitor and evaluate the technical and agronomic performance of smallholder irrigation schemes. Indicators used were an increase in average production, cropping intensity, increase in planted area, overall irrigation efficiency, operation and maintenance costs, percentage of farmers that adopted the irrigation technology, water use at farm level, farm irrigation efficiency, training activities carried out, and self-management. It also describes soil moisture depletion (hereafter called SMD), management allowed depletion (hereafter called MAD), irrigation methods (basin, basin check, border strip, furrow, sprinkler, and drip), efficiency and uniformity of irrigation (Distribution Uniformity and Application Efficiency of Low Quarter, Potential Application Efficiency of Low Quarter). Furthermore, it includes essential deficit irrigation between limited and stress irrigation and high-frequency irrigation.
