Abstract
Much of the work on physician wellbeing has focused on bolstering individual skills. Because many drivers of poor wellbeing are attributable to the environment, we advocate an organizational view of the problem. In this chapter, we review quantitative and qualitative methodologies for evaluating organizational structures and institutional policies. We illustrate these techniques using examples from our experience characterizing surgical residency programs in the FIRST and SECOND Trials.
