Abstract
The endometrium is the tissue lining the uterine cavity. This tissue consists of epithelium (endometrial glands) and stroma (endometrial stroma).
This tissue becomes atrophic after menopause as a result of ovarian failure. At this time there is loss of the functional layer and the endometrial glands take on a simple tubular or low cuboidal, often cystic, form, showing neither proliferative nor secretory activity, whereas the endometrial stroma becomes fibrotic.
There are four histological types of atrophic endometrium, atrophic inactive, atrophic/weakly proliferative (non-inactive), mixed (inactive and non-inactive), and cystic atrophic.
