Abstract
Building an academic career in breast surgical oncology requires balancing high quality patient-centered care, protected time for research, trainee education, and professional development. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of contemporary breast cancer care, it is not only critical to establish relationships with your medical and radiation oncology colleagues, but also with breast radiologists, pathologists, geneticists, and faculty in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Success in breast cancer research requires identification of a unique and novel academic niche, with focused efforts towards national recognition. This chapter will outline identifying the optimal breast surgery position, and strategies for building a successful clinical practice while allowing time for academic development and promotion within academic breast surgery.
