Abstract

Certain skin conditions are more common in children (like atopic eczema, warts, molluscum contagiosum and keratosis pilaris). Infants and children’s skin is different from adult skin. Their skin barrier function and immune system is less well developed and they are more prone to irritants, allergens and infections. In addition, children are more likely to present with congenital abnormalities (such as haemangioma or congenital naevi) and inherited diseases (genodermatoses). Treating skin disease in children can be more challenging as many of the treatment used in adults such as potent topical steroids or oral anti-fungal tablets are either more likely to cause side effects in children or are not licensed to use in children.
