Gastroparesis

Abstract

Gastric electrical stimulation (GES) has received growing interest as a treatment modality for patients suffering from severe medically refractory gastroparesis. The pathophysiology of gastroparesis is poorly understood, and so too is the mechanism of GES. Here we review the suspected cellular and myoelectric injuries underlying gastroparesis and the proposed mechanism behind the only commercially available GES device that is currently available. The indications for GES and the method of implantation will be addressed. This will be followed by an up-to-date review of clinical outcomes.
