Abstract

Subculture: The Meaning of Style laid down the maker for the study of the power of music and the groups of people who built communities of activity around that music. Hebdige’s work cannot be dismissed but can be critiqued in ways to account for some of the missing and I feel misunderstood elements of his analysis. His position on Class and Ethnicity needs a critique for what he misunderstood at that time and what has transpired since. Class and the relationship between Black and White youth needs a more in-depth analysis to account for the complexity of both realities within Punk. This chapter addresses those issues.
