Abstract

Persistent or chronic cough is defined as such when it last for more than 8 weeks. It is the most common respiratory symptom in children. There are several causes of chronic cough as a consequence of the interaction of different mechanisms, so an integrated approach is important for differential diagnosis and specific treatment. The most common causes of chronic cough in children are upper airway cough syndrome, cough-variant asthma, and prolonged bacterial bronchitis. Symptomatic therapy is needed in rare instances and should be considered only as an adjuvant in the case of a fastidious and unresponsive cough.
