Abstract

To assess respiratory function in patients with neuromuscular diseases is a challenge because the patient can provide only limited cooperation with the tests and experiences early fatigue when performing repeated maneuvers. This highlights the importance of a well-trained technician to be able to determine if a poor maneuver is acceptable for a given patient. Several tests assess respiratory muscle function, but most of those used are static pressures: the maximum inspiratory pressure, maximum expiratory pressure, and maximum expiratory flow generated by a cough (peak cough flow). A simple but functional test is the walk test, which is related to the actual quality of life.
