Abstract

Hegel is rightly credited with developing the history of philosophy as an independent discipline. While in his treatment of history of philosophy he relied on his predecessors (J.J. Brucker, W.G. Tennemann, J.G. Buhle), Hegel never intended to develop a descriptive chronicle of historical philosophy. Instead, he seeks to provide a historical-philosophical concept that would fit into his evolving philosophical system and demonstrate what we can learn philosophically from philosophy’s history. This chapter discusses Hegel’s treatment of the history of philosophy, highlighting numerous insights Hegel formulates in his still less known Lectures on the topic.
