Abstract

There are roughly 40 million immigrants living in the USA. To date, there is little literature and research directly exploring best practice and research perspectives in immigrant groups. The aim of this chapter is to review the existing data on research via three critical variables: immigration status, acculturation, and resiliency in relation to mental health. In addition, practice perspectives in assessment via linguistic and psychometric considerations, and practical solutions are considered and effective counseling perspectives are discussed. Lastly, a new psychiatric perspective with immigrant groups and future directions are introduced which has many clinical practice implications for the large number of Latino immigrants that continue crossing the Southwestern US border each day.
