Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is defined, as are the common causes, including the epidemiologic and pathophysiologic bases. Types and patterns of emphysema are defined, as well as the specific causes of each, including both common and rare causes and both congenital and acquired etiologies. Radiologic signs are defined, as are the common complications of COPD.
