Abstract

Skin biopsy with intraepidermal nerve fiber density evaluation has become the gold standard diagnostic test for small fiber neuropathy. The density of cutaneous autonomic fibers, including sudomotor, vasomotor, and pilomotor fibers can also be evaluated on skin biopsy sections. The skin biopsy procedure, skin biopsy specimen processing, and small cutaneous nerve fiber evaluation are reviewed in this chapter.
