Abstract

Increased availability and use of sensitive diagnostic abdominal imaging have led to the detection of benign focal liver lesions in many patients. These are a heterogenous group of nodular lesions, arising from different cell lines, including mesenchymal cells, hepatocytes, or cholangiocytes, often found in the background of an otherwise normal-appearing liver. This chapter will focus on three common benign focal liver lesions encountered in clinical practice, including hepatic hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH), and hepatic adenoma (HA), which offer diverse diagnostic and management challenges for the provider. The prevalence of these benign liver lesions is significantly higher in women.
