Abstract

This chapter summarizes a systematic approach to evaluating radiographs in the setting of arthropathies. This approach is divided into four basic categories: joint surface and bone contour changes, bone density, osseous alignment, and soft tissue changes. Radiographs of the hands are used to outline the recommended approach for assessing suspected joint disease, including multiple examples of both inflammatory and degenerative arthritis. This chapter provides a concise systematic overview of how to approach and analyze radiographs in rheumatic disease patients.
