Abstract

The set of surgical instruments used by Greco-Roman surgeons for trepanation were terebra, modiolus, abaptista, meningophylax, lenticular and other general instruments useful for bone surgery. All of these instruments and their use are described in this chapter. Unfortunately, until now, there are no archaeological remains of these instruments. Therefore, the suggested appearance of these instruments has been done under the particular interpretation of the Renaissance authors centuries later. However, Greco-Roman instruments for trepanation have been the fundamentals for the designs of trepanning tools during centuries.
