Abstract
Air outside of the expected location of air-containing hollow viscus can be due to a wide range of etiologies, including both benign and life-threatening emergencies. This includes abnormal air within the peritoneal cavity (pneumoperitoneum), air within the wall of the bowel (pneumatosis), and air throughout the liver (portal venous gas). Recognition of abnormal collections of air on radiographs is key to initiating further investigation radiographically or clinically.
