Abstract

About 80% of patients with psoriasis have some degree of scalp involvement, and most of them report a negative impact on their quality of life. Scalp psoriasis treatment is challenging because the presence of hair makes it difficult to apply certain products. Shampoos, lotions, gels, and foams are preferable to thicker creams and ointments. High-potency topical corticosteroids are the first-line treatment, used alone or in combination with vitamin D analogs. Other topical therapies include coal tar, salicylic acid, tazarotene, and anthralin. Phototherapy and systemic agents are other alternatives for patients who do not achieve sufficient improvement with topical agents. Despite the wide range of available therapies, long-term management has been unsatisfactory, often because of the safety of chronic drug use.
