Abstract

People with developmental disabilities commonly experience pain and may be at a higher risk than the general population in this regard. Although pain relief is a human right, pain is frequently missed and discounted in this population. Limitations in cognitive abilities, communication, and comorbidities lend complexity to the expression and experience of pain in people with developmental disabilities. Starting with a general overview of pain, this chapter provides a comprehensive, up-to-date review of pain in people with developmental disabilities including incidence, prevalence, special considerations, and current issues. Pain assessment approaches, tools, and management strategies are reviewed and demonstrated through clinical case examples and research illustrations. Future research directions such as focusing on education and pain management are also discussed.
