Abstract
The role of the anesthesiologist as a perioperative physician is to perform a preoperative evaluation of each patient prior to administering an anesthetic, help optimize comorbidities when needed, and provide the safest anesthetic possible during the patient’s procedure. The type of anesthetic, airway management, and perioperative pain plan depend upon surgical and patient factors. Anesthesiologists continue care of the patient in the post-anesthesia care unit where anesthetic complications may arise.
