Abstract
The need for industrial research efforts to incorporate the talents, specialized capabilities and flexibility that come by partnering with academic research labs will continue to rise. This presents unique opportunities and challenges for academic research labs. Here we detail the cultural, marketing, and budgetary challenges of such relationships when they are structured on a “fee-for-service” basis. We detail our experience at the University of Michigan of trying to address these challenges while offering practical solutions. The important point is that overcoming these challenges can provide for more rapid innovation in industrial research efforts and provide diversified revenue to support the next generation of academic research capabilities.
