Abstract
Family plays a pivotal role in Switzerland, mainly because the Swiss welfare state relies on functioning and supporting families. In our ten families, we indeed find a strong relationship as well as very similar values and attitudes between the three generations. At the same time, however, our interviewed young adults are highly economically dependent on their parents, regardless of their strong emphasis on their independence and freedom of choice. Thus, they feel independent without being it—at least in an economic sense.
