Abstract
Hospitals whether they be funded from direct fee paying or insured patients or free at the point of delivery such as the National Health Service in the United Kingdom are faced with the challenge of providing high quality healthcare within a tight financial envelope. A Global increase in life expectancy, the increasing burden of chronic illness needing lifelong treatment and care combined with increasing patient awareness and expectations has led to an increase in the cost of providing high quality healthcare and an associated rise in demand for that healthcare to be affordable.
So how can hospitals achieve their goal of delivering high quality healthcare while maintaining financial stability? This chapter looks at the factors that underpin a successful hospital, how we can identifying when things are not going right and the strategy for hospitals to transform and sustain their success.
