Abstract
Narrative of a tour taken in the year 1667 to la Grande Chartreuse and Alet by Dom Claude Lancelot (1813) was Mary Anne Schimmelpeninck’s first book. It was written to raise money to support the failing insurance business in Bristol of Lambert Schimmelpenninck, the Dutch aristocrat she had married seven years before (Hankin 1858, 360–362). It had success enough to be revised and reprinted in two, and then three volumes in 13 years, and to be republished in a fifth edition after her death (Schimmelpenninck 1813; Schimmelpenninck 1816). The book was both a travelogue and the first history in English of Jansenism, some of its key figures, and the Port Royal sites in France where it had emerged and developed.
